Five years should have passed to start the beatification process of Karol Wojtyła. Yet, before the end of three months, Pope Benedict ordered the immediate start of the process. Perhaps he was struck by the words that had been heard on St. Peter's Square and which, regardless of the media hype, echoed the universal and profound reverence that surrounded John Paul II throughout the world. But there was certainly a heartfelt feeling, appreciation and spiritual admiration of Ratzinger for his predecessor. Thus, the case was referred to a 'preferential path'. The testimonies (depositions) of clergy and lay people about the holiness of John Paul II were collected and a list of miracles was laid out, which various people claimed to have received through his intercession. I am convinced that these testimonies have proved to be very helpful in reproducing the authentic history of John Paul II. The history of his life, of extraordinary life, of his fascinating holiness and of his fervent love of God and neighbor.
John Paul II undoubtedly dominated the Church and the world stage at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. He was the protagonist of the most important events. He spoke on a number of key issues. He performed on the new areopagi of the modern world. He made important decisions. He issued many documents. In the midst of all this - as the testifiers acknowledged during the beatification process, the truth about John Paul II emerged. His character emerged as a shepherd, a guide, a teacher of faith. A disciple of Jesus Christ, a witness of the crucified and risen Lord.
