I had to visit Poland! I have to support the Poles!

As the plane approached the landing, John Paul II saw through the window how he was getting closer to his Homeland. He was focused, touched. He spoke so softly that I could hardly hear his voice. He talked about the trip as a duty: "I had to visit Poland! I have to support the Poles!" He was the first Pope to cross the threshold of a communist country. This happened in June 1979, when the heart of Europe was still cut by the Iron Curtain and the whole world was divided ideologically (...)
After Warsaw, the next one was Gniezno, the cradle of Christian Poland. (...) In Gniezno, the Holy Father spoke of the rights of man and nations. He was talking about moral solidarity, not about the union that did not exist at the time. He talked about solidarity between people. These were significant words of support not only for Poles, but also for all neighboring nations.
